ACOLYTES

Two people in white robes hold tall lit candles, standing indoors, exuding a ceremonial atmosphere. They wear subtle expressions of calm focus.

The word acolyte means is derived from the Greek word akolouthos, which means “attendant” or “one who helps”. Anyone who serves as an Acolyte is joining the ranks of those who have helped with the worship service since the early Christian church.

At St. Paul’s by the Sea, this ministry is open to adults, teenagers, and children as young as fourth grade. Being an acolyte gives a layperson the chance to play an important role in worship, actively assisting the priest in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Each year, we welcome new acolytes to the role, with trainings held occasionally through the program year and regularly in the summer. Training sessions help prepare you to perform the duties of the acolyte.
