ORGAN RENOVATION

OUR ORGAN

The organ is a breathing instrument, where sound is made with “wind” that requires moving air through pipes. The moving parts that make this wind possible—“wind chests,” held together by many leather components—wear down over years of hard work. St. Paul’s by-the-Sea has partnered with the A.E. Schlueter Pipe Organ Company of Lithonia, GA to invest in the future of our pipe organ by updating these leather components.

Additionally, Schlueter will install a new, state-of-the-art console to replace the previously aged and failing console. The console is where the organist plays, including the keys and pedals. The Schlueter company will also expand the tonal capabilities of the instrument for more robust sound in the years ahead. This is an exciting time for music at St. Paul’s by-the-Sea!

In late May 2025, the Schlueter company removed the console, wind chests, and several ranks (sets) of pipes, packed them in their large truck, and transported these components to their shop in Lithonia, GA. Over nearly nine months, the Schlueter shop will work to replace the leather components, restore the pipework to its former glory, construct new pipes, and build the new console. At the end of this time, the Schlueter company will return to St. Paul’s by-the-Sea to install the new components.
